In 2023 the manufacturer behind Hydronate commissioned an independent panel of four scientists and physicians to audit its marketing claims against the published literature, using the legal standard the FTC applies to dietary supplements. Twenty-one claims went in. All twenty-one came back substantiated. This page is that report, in plain English, with the studies attached.
How to read this page.
What “substantiated” actually means
It does not mean “cures.” Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, a structure/function claim has to rest on competent and reliable scientific evidence — real studies, run properly, by people qualified to run them, that a reasonable expert in the field would accept. The panel weighed the whole body of evidence for each claim, including the trials that found nothing, and then wrote down whether it held up.
One detail matters more than any single number on this page. The panel confirmed that a Hydronate tablet delivers as much hydrogen as, or more than, the trials it relies on — and that several of those trials were run on this exact tablet. Look for the cobalt tag.

Oxidative stress & inflammation
Molecular hydrogen is the smallest molecule there is, so it reaches places antioxidants from food cannot — inside the cell, inside the mitochondria. There it neutralises the most destructive free radicals, like the hydroxyl radical, while leaving alone the reactive oxygen species your body uses for signalling. It also switches on your own antioxidant system through the Keap1/Nrf2 pathway. That selectivity is the reason it lowers oxidative stress in people who have too much of it and does nothing measurable in people who do not.
60 adults with metabolic syndrome, 24 weeks, randomized double-blind placebo-controlled. Vitamins C and E rose while TBARS, MDA and diene conjugates all fell. Inflammatory TNF-α dropped 18.75% and IL-6 dropped 15.8%.
Adults with potential metabolic syndrome. Urinary TBARS fell 43% and SOD — one of your body's own antioxidant enzymes — rose 39%. The effect was larger in smokers than non-smokers.
Pooled analysis of the published trials. The effect on malondialdehyde was −0.97 (95% CI −1.65 to −0.19, p = 0.01), classed as a large effect.
60 patients, randomized double-blind placebo-controlled. SOD and GST rose while MDA and XOD fell.
60 subjects. Oxidative stress fell only in the people who started with the highest levels. Hydrogen did not drag healthy readings below normal.
Four weeks of hydrogen-rich water significantly lowered transcription of the inflammatory genes IL-1β, IL-8 and IL-6R.
Two-week placebo-controlled pilot in COVID-19 patients using the tablet form. IL-6 fell 5.8% on hydrogen while rising 16.2% on placebo.
The original mechanism paper. Hydrogen reacts with the hydroxyl radical, the most damaging one, but leaves nitric oxide, hydrogen peroxide and superoxide — your signalling molecules — untouched.
Cholesterol, blood pressure & blood vessels
Blood vessels lined with oxidative damage do not relax properly, so the heart pushes harder against stiffer pipes. Hydrogen addresses the damage rather than the symptom, which is why the effects turn up both immediately — as measurable vessel dilation — and slowly, as cholesterol ratios and blood pressure drift back toward normal over months.
60 adults with metabolic syndrome, more than 11 mg of hydrogen a day for 24 weeks, randomized double-blind placebo-controlled. Total cholesterol fell nearly 10%, the cholesterol-to-HDL ratio 7.2%, and the triglyceride-to-HDL ratio 22.9%.
60 subjects, 24 weeks, randomized double-blind placebo-controlled. Circulating ACE fell 5.3% and blood pressure fell roughly 15 over 14 mmHg — moving the group average out of pre-hypertension and into the normal range, 127/83 down to 112/70.
34 healthy adults, one 3.5 mg serving. Flow-mediated dilation of the brachial artery rose 19.9%, a direct measure of how well a blood vessel opens. On placebo it slightly decreased.
Seven high-quality trials, 256 participants pooled. Significant reductions in total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides (p = 0.01), small to moderate in size.
21 hemodialysis patients followed for 24 weeks. Post-dialysis blood pressure fell from 148/71 to 131/67 mmHg.
36 subjects, 1 mg a day for 8 weeks, double-blind placebo-controlled crossover with a 12-week washout. Small dense LDL and charge-modified LDL fell significantly and homocysteine drifted down 5.3%. Blood pressure did not move — these subjects were already normotensive.
40 adults over 70, 24 weeks. Total cholesterol fell 6.67% and the cholesterol-to-HDL ratio 12.5%, but blood pressure did not budge in this group. Worth knowing.
Six months of hydrogen-rich water prevented atherosclerosis developing in apoE-knockout mice, and did so more effectively than folic acid, vitamin E, iron or alpha-lipoic acid.
Blood sugar, body weight & composition
This is the most heavily studied claim of the twenty-one: more than ten human trials, roughly 300 subjects, 4 to 24 weeks, doses from 1 mg to over 11 mg a day. The pattern across all of them is the same — above about 120 mg/dL hydrogen lowers glucose, and between 70 and 100 mg/dL it changes nothing in either direction.
60 adults with metabolic syndrome, over 11 mg/day for 24 weeks, randomized double-blind placebo-controlled. Fasting glucose fell 15% — 122 down to 103 mg/dL — while the placebo group drifted up 2%. HbA1c fell about 12% (p < 0.001), and BMI and waist-hip measurements fell alongside it.
28 days in physically inactive overweight adults. Insulin sensitivity improved by up to 11.1% over placebo (p < 0.05) and body fat trended down 4.2% versus 0.6% on placebo (p = 0.09).
Randomized double-blind placebo-controlled crossover in middle-aged overweight women. Body fat fell 1.4% and the arm fat index 5.7%, with strong trends on arm circumference (p = 0.09) and waist-to-hip ratio (p = 0.07).
36 subjects with an average BMI of 23.4 — already healthy. Eight weeks of hydrogen-rich water had no effect on BMI at all. This is the honest boundary of the claim.
40 adults over 70, over 7.5 mg/day for 24 weeks. No change in BMI or fat mass, but lean body mass trended up by nearly 5%.
In obese diabetic mice, three months of hydrogen-rich water suppressed fat and weight gain by inducing FGF21, a liver hormone that raises energy expenditure. Those mice burned 10% more oxygen than controls.
Cell studies show hydrogen promotes GLUT4 translocation in muscle and fat cells — the mechanism that pulls glucose out of the blood.
Mental fatigue, brain metabolism & mitochondria
Four of the twenty-one claims cover the brain and one covers mitochondria, the parts of your cells that actually make energy. They belong together: measured mitochondrial output, measured lactate clearance and measured cognitive performance all move in the same direction.
16 healthy, sleep-deprived, habitual coffee drinkers, tested head-to-head against caffeine, hydrogen plus caffeine, and control water. Hydrogen alone significantly cut the time to finish the trail-making test and the error count on the symbol digit test (p < 0.05), and shifted the choline-to-creatine ratio in frontal gray and white matter.
23 young adults sleep-deprived for 24 hours. A single dose raised alertness by 1.7 points on average (p = 0.003) and cut orientation stress 2.4% (p = 0.05).
12 weeks in overweight adults, measured by MR spectroscopy. N-acetylaspartate — a marker of neuron health — rose significantly in the posterior cingulate, prefrontal gray matter and thalamus, with medium-to-large effect sizes of 0.70, 0.51 and 0.80. Nothing changed on placebo.
24 COVID-19 patients. Several blood biomarkers improved and disease-related fatigue eased.
12 healthy men. Mitochondrial activity rose, evidenced by higher submaximal VO₂ and elevated expired acetate.
Two trials in patients with mitochondrial myopathies. The double-blind arm showed a significant improvement in lactate, the clearest available readout of mitochondrial function.
Pooled analysis concluding that hydrogen reduces exercise-induced psychometric fatigue.
24 young men. Hydrogen lowered perceived exertion and heart rate during exercise by improving prefrontal cortex activation, measured with fNIRS.
Cell studies show hydrogen triggers the mitochondrial unfolded protein response — part of how mitochondria repair and regenerate themselves. Replicated by Hasegawa, Ito et al. 2022.
Exercise, endurance, joints & functional fitness
Exercise is oxidative stress on purpose. Hydrogen does not blunt the training adaptation — it clears the collateral damage, which shows up as lower lactate at the same intensity, lower perceived effort, and faster recovery from soft-tissue injury.
12 women averaging 53.8 years, 1 L of tablet-made hydrogen water a day for 28 days, randomized placebo-controlled crossover. VO₂max improved significantly over placebo, as did work capacity and weight-related quality of life.
19 healthy adults, 5 mg of hydrogen, randomized double-blind placebo-controlled crossover on a graded treadmill test. Maximal performance was unchanged, but exercising heart rate and respiratory rate fell significantly through minutes 1 to 9 — submaximal work simply got easier.
36 male professional athletes with soft-tissue injuries, split three ways. Both hydrogen groups — oral tablets, and oral plus topical hydrogen packs — recovered joint flexion and extension faster than standard treatment at both 7 and 14 days.
Two experiments. 99 untrained participants showed significantly less psychometric fatigue after mild exercise; 60 trained participants improved maximal oxygen consumption and reported lower Borg-scale fatigue.
Hydrogen before exercise lowered blood lactate at higher intensities, improved ventilatory efficiency and reduced the perception of effort.
18 professional athletes with acute ankle sprains. Hydrogen hydrotherapy matched the standard rest-ice-compression-elevation protocol on swelling, range of motion and single-leg balance.
Adults aged 70 and over, six months. Chair-stand performance improved significantly over control water (p = 0.01), with strong effect sizes (d > 0.8) on arm curl and the 8-foot up-and-go.
16 community-dwelling older adults, 4 weeks. Cumulative AHA cardiovascular risk scores fell while cardiorespiratory fitness and handgrip strength rose.
Microbiome, gut barrier & liver
Hydrogen reaches your gut before it reaches anything else, and more is produced there when unreacted magnesium meets stomach acid. Trials consistently show a shift toward the bacteria you want — Bifidobacterium, and the ones that make butyrate — alongside lower fecal calprotectin, a direct marker of gut inflammation.
73 adults with impaired glucose tolerance, 1.4 mg a day for 8 weeks. Fasting glucose fell significantly, gut dysbiosis improved on 16S sequencing, and more subjects with pre-existing fatty liver reached remission than on plain water.
20 subjects, randomized double-blind placebo-controlled, on just 0.15 mg a day for two weeks. Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium adolescentis both increased against placebo.
38 subjects, 8 weeks. Low baseline Bacteroides was restored, and overall gut flora abundance and diversity increased.
12 weeks. Total serum short-chain fatty acids trended strongly upward versus placebo, and fecal calprotectin — a direct inflammation marker — fell significantly.
28 days, randomized placebo-controlled crossover in patients with fatty liver disease. Liver fat accumulation fell significantly and AST dropped 10%.
144 cancer patients on mFOLFOX6 chemotherapy. ALT, AST and bilirubin rose only in the placebo group — hydrogen prevented the chemotherapy-induced liver damage.
Six weeks in patients with chronic hepatitis B significantly improved liver function.
In mice with induced ulcerative colitis, hydrogen-rich water performed comparably to the drug sulfasalazine.
Telomeres, SIRT1 & lifespan
The aging mechanisms hydrogen touches are the ones you can actually measure: telomere length, SIRT1 expression, and the cell's own stress-response pathways. This is early evidence — one clinical trial plus cell and animal work — and the panel substantiated it partly on the strength of the redox and cardiovascular findings elsewhere on this page.
40 adults over 70, more than 7.5 mg a day for 24 weeks, randomized placebo-controlled. Telomere length rose 4.1% from baseline. In the placebo group it fell 11.1%.
In human umbilical cells, hydrogen-rich water raised telomerase activity 148.4% and increased SIRT1 expression dose-dependently.
Human endothelial cells exposed to the pollutant TCDD developed every marker of premature aging — DNA damage, impaired SIRT1, senescence. Cells given hydrogen alongside it did not.
In short-lived transgenic mice, hydrogen-rich water significantly extended mean lifespan, though not maximum lifespan.
Extended nematode lifespan by up to 30%, apparently by reducing oxidative stress. Replicated by Zhang, Li et al. 2020, and in fruit flies by Klichko, Safonov et al. 2019.

Wrinkles, blotches & collagen
Wrinkles form when oxidative stress and inflammation break collagen and elastin down faster than skin rebuilds them. Hydrogen slows that breakdown, and animal work shows it protects collagen directly from UVA damage. The panel substantiated the claim — but the human evidence is case series and very small trials, and we would rather you knew that now than found out later.
Five healthy subjects aged 49 to 66. Daily 10-minute hydrogen-water bathing plus a poultice application, for 11 to 98 days, measurably improved wrinkle and blotch scores on Image-J analysis and raised skin moisture.
Six Japanese subjects, daily hydrogen-water bathing for three months. Wrinkles on the back of the neck improved in four of them by day 90. The proposed mechanism is ROS scavenging plus type-I collagen synthesis.
Case study of two men and two women. Six months of hydrogen-water bathing improved skin blotches.
Mice exposed to UVA by day and hydrogen gas by night for six weeks. Hydrogen prevented hyperplasia, melanogenesis and senescent-cell buildup, and protected collagen from degradation.
Hydrogen promotes collagen synthesis, confirmed again by Nishiwaki, Ito et al. 2018. Zhao, Wang et al. 2013 separately found improved skin blood-flow perfusion.
Motility, count & testosterone
Sperm are unusually vulnerable to oxidative stress, and excess reactive oxygen species disrupt both motility and the testosterone production sperm depend on. Hydrogen's selectivity is the whole point here — it clears the damaging radicals without flattening the signalling ones.
12 healthy young men, six of them with oligospermia, 8 weeks, double-blind placebo-controlled. Sperm vitality was significantly better than placebo (p = 0.03), live cells rose 3.8%, and concentration trended up by 12.4 million per milliliter.
Human sperm in the lab. Thirty minutes of hydrogen exposure significantly improved forward motility where nitrogen gas did nothing, and both mitochondrial membrane potential and ATP rose. Low-motility frozen-thawed patient samples improved too.
In mice given chronic nicotine, vitamins C and E barely helped. Hydrogen-rich saline reduced testicular oxidative stress and protected against the reproductive damage.
Rats with smoke-induced reproductive damage drinking hydrogen water showed higher testosterone, a higher sperm count and fewer deformed sperm.
A study only counts if your dose matches it.
Every trial on this page used a specific amount of hydrogen. A tablet that produces a fraction of that does not inherit the result. So the panel checked Hydronate's dose against the trials — and an independent lab measured it by gas chromatography rather than taking the label's word for it.
