Every claim on this site, traced back to a clinical trial.

In 2023 the manufacturer behind Hydronate commissioned an independent panel of four scientists and physicians to audit its marketing claims against the published literature, using the legal standard the FTC applies to dietary supplements. Twenty-one claims went in. All twenty-one came back substantiated. This page is that report, in plain English, with the studies attached.

The standard

What “substantiated” actually means

It does not mean “cures.” Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, a structure/function claim has to rest on competent and reliable scientific evidence — real studies, run properly, by people qualified to run them, that a reasonable expert in the field would accept. The panel weighed the whole body of evidence for each claim, including the trials that found nothing, and then wrote down whether it held up.

One detail matters more than any single number on this page. The panel confirmed that a Hydronate tablet delivers as much hydrogen as, or more than, the trials it relies on — and that several of those trials were run on this exact tablet. Look for the cobalt tag.

Glossary

Five terms, then you’re fluent

RDBPC Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled. Nobody — not the subject, not the researcher — knew who got the real thing. The gold standard.
n = 60 How many people were in the study. Bigger is more reliable, though a small, tightly run trial still counts for something.
p < 0.05 The odds this result was a fluke are under 5%. That is the usual bar for calling something significant.
mg/day How much hydrogen gas was consumed per day. One Hydronate tablet delivers 3 to 6.2 mg.
Meta-analysis Someone pooled many separate trials and analyzed them together. The strongest form of evidence there is.

Oxidative stress & inflammation

Hydrogen does one thing. Every other section on this page is a downstream consequence of it.

Molecular hydrogen is the smallest molecule there is, so it reaches places antioxidants from food cannot — inside the cell, inside the mitochondria. There it neutralises the most destructive free radicals, like the hydroxyl radical, while leaving alone the reactive oxygen species your body uses for signalling. It also switches on your own antioxidant system through the Keap1/Nrf2 pathway. That selectivity is the reason it lowers oxidative stress in people who have too much of it and does nothing measurable in people who do not.

60 patients, randomized double-blind placebo-controlled. SOD and GST rose while MDA and XOD fell.

Ogawa, Ohsaki et al. 2022Human trial

Cholesterol, blood pressure & blood vessels

Three of the twenty-one claims live here: blood lipids, blood pressure, and cardiovascular health overall.

Blood vessels lined with oxidative damage do not relax properly, so the heart pushes harder against stiffer pipes. Hydrogen addresses the damage rather than the symptom, which is why the effects turn up both immediately — as measurable vessel dilation — and slowly, as cholesterol ratios and blood pressure drift back toward normal over months.

Blood sugar, body weight & composition

Hydrogen brings high blood sugar down. It leaves normal blood sugar exactly where it is.

This is the most heavily studied claim of the twenty-one: more than ten human trials, roughly 300 subjects, 4 to 24 weeks, doses from 1 mg to over 11 mg a day. The pattern across all of them is the same — above about 120 mg/dL hydrogen lowers glucose, and between 70 and 100 mg/dL it changes nothing in either direction.

Wrinkles, blotches & collagen

Read this one carefully: the human studies are small, and most used hydrogen bathing rather than drinking.

Wrinkles form when oxidative stress and inflammation break collagen and elastin down faster than skin rebuilds them. Hydrogen slows that breakdown, and animal work shows it protects collagen directly from UVA damage. The panel substantiated the claim — but the human evidence is case series and very small trials, and we would rather you knew that now than found out later.

The honest part

What none of this means.

Hydrogen is not a drug and not a treatment. Every claim here is a structure/function claim: it describes support for normal function, not the cure, prevention or treatment of any disease.
It mostly moves numbers that are out of range. Across glucose, lipids, blood pressure and oxidative stress, the trials found effects in people whose markers were elevated and no effect in people whose markers were normal. If you are already healthy, expect maintenance rather than transformation.
Some evidence bases are far thinner than others. Blood sugar rests on ten-plus trials and roughly 300 subjects. Skin rests on a handful of people. Every study on this page is labelled with its size so you can weigh them yourself.
Not every trial used a tablet you drink. A few used inhaled hydrogen gas, hydrogen-rich saline or hydrogen bathing. Those are tagged separately so you can tell them apart.
Findings that went nowhere are on this page too. Blood pressure did not move in the over-70s trial. BMI did not move in subjects who already had a healthy BMI. Leaving those out would make this a brochure, not a research library.
